Date Rape

What is date rape?

Date rape occurs when someone you’ve been dating forces you to have sex or perform sexual acts against your will.  Date rape can occur at anytime during the dating relationship.

How does the rapist gain control over his/her victim?

The rapist may use coercion, drugs, physical force, or a weapon to gain control over the victim.

What are date rape drugs?

Some of the most common date rape drugs are Rohypnol (roofies), GHB (Gamma Hydroxybutyric Acid), and Ketamine.  These drugs can incapacitate a victim and even cause memory loss.  These drugs are very difficult to detect and may be mixed with a victim’s drink.  There have been some reports that perpetrators are lacing lollipops with date rape drugs.

Is alcohol a date rape drug?

Most definitely!  Alcohol is one of the most commonly used date rape drugs because it is easily accessible.  Alcohol lowers a victim’s inhibitions and can also slow a victims ability to react in a dangerous situation.  Marijuana, ecstacy, and even some over-the-counter sleep aids can also be used as date rape drugs.

My boyfriend forced me to have sex with him.  Is that really rape?  I mean, we are dating and we have had sex before.

Any sex without your consent is rape.  If you were forced to have sex with your boyfriend against your will, then you were raped.

I was drinking, underage, at a party and I think I was raped.  Is it my fault?

The circumstances surrounding a rape are irrelevant.  You have the right to consent to or deny sex.  If you were raped, IT WAS NOT YOUR FAULT!!!

What do I do if I was raped, I think I was raped, or I know someone who may have been raped?

If you trust your parents, talk to them.  Let them help you.  If you do not believe your parents can help, find an adult you trust or call our sexual assault hotline at (804) 694-5890.  It is important that you seek some kind of help when dealing with a sexual assault.
