Rape and Sexual Assault
What is the difference between rape and sexual assault? (Legally speaking…) Rape is forced sexual intercourse, including vaginal, anal, or oral penetration. Penetration may be by a body part or an object. Sexual assault is unwanted sexual contact that stops short of rape or attempted rape. This includes sexual touching and fondling. (While the terms sexual assault and rape may have different legal definitions, we use the terms interchangeably.)
It is important to note: · Sexual assault is a crime of violence, power and control. · Sexual assault victims can be any race, age, or from any socio-economic background. · Sexual assaults can happen at any place and at any time. |
