Quick EscapeOctober is Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month

Events:

Georgetown Farms Annual BBQ Fundraiser

This event has been a successful fundraiser for Laurel Shelter, Inc.  The event boasts a silent auction and an evening of fun and entertainment.  We will need volunteers to staff the auction, serve food, take tickets, set-up and clean-up, and help in preparations for the event.  We will send out more information as it becomes available.  Volunteers may purchase food and/or drinks at the event.

Take Back the Night - October 24th

The event is a “march” aimed at showing a commitment towards ending domestic and sexual violence in our community.  Events are intended to recognize the power that victims have, emphasize the importance of talking about abuse, and working to overcome the effects.  This is a very empowering event and it definitely makes a statement about our commitment to end all types of abuse in our community.  We will need many volunteers to help support this event.

T-shirt and Silhouette Displays

These two projects are visible reminders of the amount of domestic and sexual abuse that exist in our community.  Clients will decorate T-shirts that are color-coded to represent the type of abuse they have endured.  We will also be creating silhouettes to represent each victim from Gloucester, Mathews, and Middlesex counties during the past year.  We’ve just begun counting victims and their children from last year and we are well past 200.  We will need volunteer support to help set-up these displays.

Speaking Engagements

During October, we try to attend as many speaking engagements as possible.  If you would like to speak to a group about our program, or if you know a group that would like us to come in and speak to them, please let us know!

Publicity and Newsletter

We will need volunteer assistance producing the Special Edition newsletter and other publications during the month of September.

If you would like to volunteer for any of these events or would like more information, please call Tiffany or Jessica at (804) 694-5890 or Shannon at (804) 694-5552.
